To get the most out of your time as an Air Cadet it is important to have some background knowledge of aviation subjects. This is not school - its much more fun!!!

From the outset of your Air Cadet career you will need to know about lots of subjects which just aren't covered by the National Curriculum. For a start you'll need to know about the organisation you are joining; where it came from, why it exsists and what it can offer you. Then there'll be other subjects that will give you a good grounding in the rest of your time with us; you'll learn what the markings are for on an airfield and about the history of flight as well as about the R.A.F. Later you'll find out about the Rifles that we use for target shooting and how to fire safely - this of course means you can go out and do it! Then there's First Aid Training and more acedemic subjects relating to aircraft.

Ever wondered how that huge chunk of metal gets up there? Well we'll teach you! We tell you about how it works; why its designed in the shape it is; how the engines make it go forwards; how a helicotper works; how the pilot controls the aircraft and much more besides! You'll be able to put all this into perspective when you take your first flight in the Grob Tutor or the Vigilant glider.

And there's more besides...

... You'll soon know how to read a map; navigate in the countryside; take a bearing; put up a tent and cook your own supper on a Trangia stove and of course THAT will come in useful when we take you hill walking!!

... You might want to try some of our other activities and so you'll want to know how to operate a Radio to talk to others over the airwaves, to do that you need to know callsigns and the phonetic alphabet and much more. Now you could enter a competition!

Does it still sound like school???

NAH!!
